Where can I find materials?

Materials for auditions should be from theatrical productions. This is not a strict requirement, but it is highly recommended to perform a monologue/song from a play/musical. Great monologues can be found from many different websites such as Performerstuff, Backstage, and The Monologue Database.

Finding a song to audition with is a bit more difficult. A good audition song highly depends on the individual performer, knowing your vocal range and vocal type is a great way to begin looking for a song in any musical you enjoy. Once you have found a song you would like to audition with, find an accompaniment to bring to the audition (download the accompaniment so no ads start playing in the middle of the audition). Bluetooth speakers will be provided.

You can also visit the black box (N160) and ask if Mr. Knight-Hauke can help you find material. He has a wide range of plays and sheet music you can choose from. If he is not available, feel free to reach out to anyone on the student board for help. If you would like hands on help finding a piece or would like to rehearse your audition in front of our board members for feedback there will be an audition Workshop after school, date to be posted soon,

What will the audition look like?

You will have scheduled a time for your audition, it is recommended that you show up 15 - 20 minutes early as slots are subject to change depending on attendance. When you are called, you will be ushered into a room with the directors (Justin Knight-Hauke & Brianna Sehorn) and vocal director (Kevin Wong). The first thing you will have to do is slate, slating is an introduction for yourself and your material. After slating, you will perform your materials in the order presented in your slate. It is recommended you start with what you believe is your strongest piece.

Here is a slating template you can follow:

"Hello, my name is (your name) and I will be performing a monologue from the play (title of play) by (name of author(s) of play) playing the character of (name of character). I will also be performing the song (name of song) from the musical (name of musical) by (name of author(s) of musical) playing the character of (name of character).

*Note: This is a template and can be altered as long as you are getting the information across.

If auditioning for the musical, the dance audition will take place on September 11th. This audition includes everyone auditioning for the musical. Everyone will be on the stage learning choreography from our amazing choreographer, Thanh. This will last for about 45 minutes, afterwards you will be split of into groups to perform the dance in front of the directors.

Callbacks

A callback may be requested depending on individual directors, in which you are invited to a secondary audition. Nothing needs to be prepared for callbacks as they often involve cold reading scenes or singing songs, sometimes with other actors, for the specific show you are being auditioned for. Sheet music may be handed out ahead of the callbacks and are to be picked up from Justin Knight-Hauke.

The callback list will be released outside the black box (N160) and on our social media, however it is entirely possible that the directors decide that a callback is not necessary. If you are not selected for a callback this does not mean you are not still being considered for the show in question.
